Habit Stacking: 25 Examples That Actually Work

Forgetting is the #1 reason new habits die. Habit stacking fixes it by attaching new habits to things you already do without thinking.

What is habit stacking?

Habit stacking is a technique popularized by James Clear in Atomic Habits (building on BJ Fogg's “anchoring” concept). Instead of relying on memory or motivation, you attach a new habit to an existing one using a single sentence:

After [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].

Your current habits are already wired into your brain — you never forget to brush your teeth or make coffee. By stacking a new behavior directly on top of one of those automatic ones, the old habit becomes the cue for the new one. No willpower, no sticky notes, no “I forgot.”

How to pick a good anchor habit

The anchor must be something you already do every single day, at a consistent moment. Test it: did you do it yesterday? The day before? Every day last week? Good anchors: waking up, coffee, brushing teeth, commuting, lunch, plugging in your phone. Bad anchors: “when I feel stressed,” “after the gym” (if the gym itself is the new habit).

One more rule: match the frequency. A daily habit needs a daily anchor. And keep the new habit tiny at first — that's the 2-minute rule.

📱 How to set up habit stacking in Atomic Strides

  1. Create a habit with the tap of the + button and name it with its cue baked in: “After brushing teeth, read 1 page.” The name itself becomes your stacking formula.
  2. Set the reminder time to the moment your anchor habit happens (e.g. 9:40 PM if you brush at 9:35). The notification fires right when the anchor does.
  3. Choose a self-care area (Sleep, Learning, Health…) so your stacks stay organized by life area.
  4. Check it off daily and watch the streak flame grow. The app's AI coach will even suggest habit stacking automatically when it spots a habit with a low success rate.
